MEET THE MAKER:
PENINSULA FRESH SEAFOOD
The Peninsula Fresh Seafood journey started in 1985 with deep-sea diver Michael Hunder founding Dromana Bay Mussels; grown wild, harvested and sold just off Safety Beach.
As a believer in supplying high quality, local and fresh produce, mussel farmer and fishmonger former Western Australian pig farmer Geoff Newing became a partner and expanded the business with a sustainable approach to fishing.
In 2013, Geoff moved the business to the Dromana Industrial Estate, providing the same end-to-end service, with the same attention to quality fresh fish. Now the team trades a select range of locally-caught whole fish, together with oysters, prawns, scallops, crabs.
“One of the things that attracted me to the mussel industry is that with pig production, you can make or break yourself based on reproduction, piglets per sow, whereas with mussels they just grow wild, there’s no breeding stock required,” said Geoff, who grew up on and farmed a 1000-sow piggery in Western Australia for a decade.

“WE LIVE IN A BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE WORLD, AND WE’RE FORTUNATE TO HAVE SUCH HEALTHY WATERS, FULL OF HEALTHY FISH. IT’S SO GOOD TO WORK ALONGSIDE BUSINESSES WHO HAVE THE SAME ENVIRONMENTAL OUTLOOK AS WE DO.”
